Pharmaceutical: Pharmaceutical Psyllium - Why Sourcing Determines Performance
Updated: 1 hour ago
The bulk-forming laxative category is dominated by one ingredient. The supply chain for that ingredient is more fragile than most pharmaceutical buyers realize. Download our line cards here.

Pharmaceutical Psyllium and the Bulk-Forming Laxative Supply
Pharmaceutical psyllium is the active that holds the over-the-counter fiber laxative shelf together. Pharmaceutical grade matters in ways the nutraceutical-grade conversation doesn't always capture: mesh standards, microbial limits, residual solvent specs, trace allergen documentation, and a COA that survives FDA inspection. A psyllium that's adequate for a fiber gummy is not necessarily adequate for a pharmaceutical bulk-forming product.

The supply itself is concentrated in Gujarat, India — a single region with seasonal harvests, weather sensitivity, and a dwindling number of true pharmaceutical-grade processors. Most pharmaceutical buyers source through importers who themselves source through brokers. By the time a quality issue surfaces, the trace is three or four hands deep.
Ampak runs its own dedicated psyllium-only processing in the U.S. and stocks the full grade range — 85%, 95%, 98%, and 99% powder grades plus Whole 95% — to match whatever specification a pharmaceutical formulator needs. No co-mingling with other materials, no shared equipment, no trace contamination risk from other gums or fibers. The supplier relationships in Gujarat go back generations, and the team on the ground sees crop and quality issues before they hit shipping schedules.
For pharmaceutical formulators, that structure is the difference between a stable program and a quarterly fire drill.
